ROUND 1 REPORT | CLIFFE CASTLE, KEIGHLEY
A strong start to the cross-country season
The opening fixture of the West Yorkshire Cross Country League took place at Cliffe Castle, Keighley, in bright sunshine with a slight chill in the air. The ground was dry and soft, creating good cross-country conditions. Across the meeting, 497 athletes completed races across 10 categories, with Bradford Airedale AC represented in a range of junior and senior events. Every Bradford Airedale AC athlete who took to the course deserves credit. For several athletes, this was their first league experience; others were stepping up into a new age category or tackling a longer distance. The opening fixture provided an encouraging start to the season.
The course
The course was built around two sections, known as Loop A and Loop B. Loop A was relatively flat but technical, with numerous tight turns requiring concentration and frequent changes of direction. Runners then had to negotiate the crossing point to reach the field known as Loop B. This section featured a long, steep climb which continued for around another 10 metres beyond the turn at the top, before runners could open their stride on the less-steep descent. The combination of tight corners, changing terrain and a sustained climb made this a course that rewarded rhythm, control and sensible pacing as much as raw speed.
Course distance note
The course distances appeared shorter than advertised. The senior men's race was listed as 7.7km but was approximately 6.5km on the day. The U16 boys' race was also reported to be around 700m shorter than stated. The exact discrepancy in the other races was not confirmed, so advertised distances should be treated with caution when comparing times.

A message to our athletes
Well done to everyone who represented Bradford Airedale AC at the opening fixture. Cross-country asks a lot of athletes as they must manage uneven ground, changes in pace, tight turns and hills, often while racing in a large field. Completing the course and giving your best effort is an achievement in itself. For those making their West Yorkshire Cross Country League debut, this was a valuable first step. For athletes moving into a new age group, it was an opportunity to test themselves against a new level of competition. Every race provides experience to carry into the next fixture.
